A simple method for
growth and agency.
Try these five steps the next time you experience a challenging thought, emotion, or situation. Start with one moment from your own life.
Begin the practiceNotice What's Happening
First, tune in to yourself. Every action or interaction leads to thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. Start by becoming aware of them before they fade, get lost in the background, or blur together.
What am I noticing in my thoughts, emotions, and body right now?
Understand What It Means
Once you are aware of what you are experiencing, start understanding the reasons, patterns, and connections behind them. By seeing the belief, trigger, coping method, story, thoughts, biases, or repeating loop underneath the moment, you start to understand why you feel or act in certain ways.
What might be underneath this reaction? Is there a familiar pattern?
Choose What To Do
Once you understand what is happening underneath, you can begin to choose how to respond or act. Instead of acting from habit, fear, impulse, or old patterns, pause and ask what next step would support your values, needs, goals, or the person you want to become.
What response would support my values, needs, or the person I want to become?
Act With Intention and Alignment
Once you have chosen your next step, act in a way that aligns with your values, needs, and direction. The decision does not have to be perfect — just intentional enough to help you build trust with yourself, learn from your experience, and move closer to the life you want to create.
What is one small action I can take with intention?
Repeat The Process
After taking action, notice the feedback. New situations, emotions, thoughts, and sensations will arrise. Repeat the process by noticing what is happening, making sense of it, choosing your next step, and acting with intention again.
What happened when I acted? What do I notice now?
Come back to it in everyday life.
You can think through the steps, write them down, or bring them into a conversation. The next ordinary moment is another chance to practice.
